With cultural significance to the Native American tribes of the Colville reservation in Inchelium, Washington, this variety was rated best softneck for flavor in 1990 at a Rodale Kitchens taste test. Its flavor is a Goldilox of garlics, not too bland, not too bold - rich with some pungency and sweetness.
Like other artichoke types it’s high yielding, stores long, and braids easily. Bulb wrappers often showcase vibrant purple splotches and streaks, and the clove wrappers have a pink blush. Plants also stand out in the garden with leaves longer and larger than most. They have a higher susceptibility to rust, and bulbs mature earlier than most artichoke types.
Bulbs are very prone to splitting when harvested late in wet springs. We stop watering with around 9 green leaves remaining and harvest with around 7-8 remaining, sooner than you would think. If there’s a big rainstorm approaching and the bulbs underground have sized up, get them inside before it pours.
